Summer Lawn Care: Expert Tips to Keep Your Grass Green and Healthy

1. Water Deeply and Early

One of the most important things you can do during late summer is water correctly. Lawns typically need about one inch of water per week, including rainfall. It’s best to water deeply and less frequently – this promotes deep root growth and improves drought tolerance.

Always water early in the morning, between 4am and 8am. This minimizes evaporation and gives the lawn time to dry out during the day, which helps prevent fungal diseases. Avoid watering in the evening, as leaving grass wet overnight can lead to problems.

2. Mow Higher and Maintain Sharp Blades

Set your mower height to 3–4 inches. Taller grass provides natural shade for the soil, helping it retain moisture and stay cooler. It also suppresses weeds and reduces the risk of stress-related browning. Never cut more than one-third of the grass blade at a time, and be sure your mower blades are sharp to avoid tearing the grass.

3. Prep for Fall Repairs

If your lawn has some bare spots or looks thin, now is the time to plan for early fall overseeding or sod installation. September is the ideal time in the Andover area – cooler temps, morning dew, and shorter days create ideal growing conditions.
