Summer on Lake George With the Dog, a Good Mix? Yes, Yes, Yes!

As you know, summer in Lake George is the BEST and the busiest! When traveling with your pet, take time and be wise! They are in a new place, with lots and lots of scents and places to explore, along with many different noises and people, especially small kids. Some dogs can easily get spooked, take off, become extremely anxious and nervous, or get overly excited!

Always check with your veterinarian BEFORE you travel to see if over-the-counter remedies are needed or perhaps a prescription for calming medications. Also, check our wonderful Lake George websites for pet-friendly places and things to do. You want your dog to be as engaged as you are, able to explore, and have the time of their life! It’s always a good idea to get them out early in the morning before the crowds arrive and the temperatures soar for a nice walk by the lake, a swim at the dog beach in the village, or perhaps a boat ride. Wear them out so that if you do have to leave them alone for a portion of the day, they will have already had some good exercise and will most likely rest until you return. Above all, NEVER EVER leave your pets in a parked car, even for 5 minutes!! Temperatures can rise quickly and can be deadly for your pup!

If you’re taking your dog on a boat, make SURE they have a life jacket on in case they jump out or fall off. Yes, they may be a good swimmer; however, they can easily become disoriented and tire quickly before you can turn the boat around to pick them up. Our waters on Lake George are busy in the summer and include many deep areas, so be smart! The Dog Cabin carries life jackets in all sizes in case you forget yours.

Be aware that we have lots of events here in the summer—Bike Week, parades, craft fairs, music festivals, and fireworks. Plan, plan, plan! Some are pet-friendly and your dog will enjoy them, while others, perhaps not so much. Always remember that summer can bring some pretty big thunderstorms, and sometimes they arrive very quickly. If your dog hates storms, consider a ThunderShirt or calming chews to help ease their anxiety. The Dog Cabin in town has them in all sizes.

Lake George Village is a very pet-friendly place, with a huge dog park, a dog beach, and hiking trails that you can enjoy with your dogs. Most restaurants with outdoor seating will allow your dog as well. There are a variety of pet-friendly lodging options around the lake. You can check local listings. There are many trees and shady spots by the water where you can enjoy and relax. You will also be able to bring your dogs to our new outdoor performance stage to listen to music and enjoy great concerts. Just be sure they are well-behaved and not disruptive to others.

The biggest challenges I often see in Lake George involve dogs and kids. Don’t allow your child to walk the dog alone, especially a larger dog, as they may not be able to handle them. Make sure your child is aware of all the rules of the town and is also equipped with water and poop bags to clean up after the pups. Many children are at face level with dogs, whether they are in a stroller or standing. Make SURE you are aware of your surroundings and that your child asks permission before petting a dog and then does so gently. Teaching children about dogs is very important. With the right training, a dog and a child can be best buds and successfully interact in public settings.

Remember, when you pack your bags before your trip, pack for your dogs too! Pack plenty of water, treats, poop bags, favorite toys, bowls, food, a leash, a collar, medications, and tick spray. The Dog Cabin has everything you need, so have no fear if you DO forget something. There are also a number of wonderful veterinary hospitals in the area. We have your back should anything happen!

Enjoy Lake George, our beautiful lake, and all it has to offer! Give your dog a vacation they will love, building happy experiences and memories to last a lifetime!
