The Advantage AI Can’t Give You

When it comes to your career it really is about who you know, not which AI tool you know best.

While AI has become increasingly useful for working smarter, your close colleagues, professional network, mentors, and coaches are what will help you stand out in seasons of career transition.

Tools Support You, But They Don’t Differentiate You

AI tools can absolutely help you convey that you’re a qualified candidate, bring keywords into a resume, and ensure your interview answers meet best practices. Where they fall short is taking you that next level you need as an executive or leader. They can help you sound competent, but not competitive for the senior roles and high-stakes opportunities where you actually need to shine…not blend in.

So how do you stand out? Think like a human. Consider what would help other colleagues, network contacts, or interviewers realize your unique core competencies.

Tip: If you find that your humility gets in the way of being able to brag, lean on what others have to say about you. Leverage that performance review or surround sound feedback, the nomination description from the award you just won, or the mentor who notices patterns in your strengths you’ve never articulated.

You Don’t Build a Strong Story in Isolation

AI tends to be validating of the status quo. People give you real reactions that can change your game.

Many professionals over-prepare by memorizing AI-written scripts and trying to sound “perfect.” What actually works is talking through your experience, and getting comfortable explaining your value in your own words.

Real-time feedback helps you identify patterns in your stories, spot what makes you valuable versus what feels routine to you, and understand what others are trusting you to deliver.

When you practice your career story in person…you see where you lose people, notice what resonates, and tighten how you explain your impact. You learn which stories land, and which need reframing.

Connection Is Your Competitive Advantage

Your network creates opportunities you can’t search for on LinkedIn or job boards. The best roles often aren’t posted. They come through conversations, referrals, and someone thinking of you at exactly the right moment.

However, people can’t advocate for you if they don’t understand what you do best. This is where your story and your relationships intersect, and where your career actually moves forward.

Ask yourself:

  • Who knows your work well enough to advocate for you?
  • Where can you get more honest feedback?
  • Are you investing in the conversations that sharpen your story and expand your network?
