Long before music, arts, and community festivals became a staple of our summers, Dundarave Village had already established one of West Vancouver’s most cherished seasonal traditions: the Dundarave Hoedown. The event has long been a source of community pride, encouraging foot traffic for local shops, strengthening resident bonds, and reinforcing Dundarave’s welcoming, close-knit identity.

Established in the 1980s, the Dundarave Hoedown was founded by a group of local business owners as a lively, family-friendly street festival designed to unite the community, support local businesses, and bring energy to Dundarave’s charming commercial district. With its country-western flair, live music, dancing, children’s activities, food vendors, and unmistakable small-town atmosphere, the Hoedown quickly captured the hearts of residents and visitors alike.

Each summer, Marine Drive would come alive, transforming from a bustling roadway into a vibrant pedestrian celebration. Pony rides, barbecues, western-themed festivities, and local merchants lined the streets, creating an event that was about far more than entertainment; it was about community connection.

As with many long-standing community events, the Hoedown eventually entered a quiet hiatus, disappearing for several years. While its absence was felt, the memories of its lively streets and festive spirit remained deeply rooted in the community. Then, in 2022, the Ambleside Dundarave Business Improvement Association brought the beloved tradition back to life.

With renewed energy and a commitment to revitalizing Dundarave Village, the ADBIA relaunched the Dundarave Hoedown as part of broader efforts to support local businesses, foster community engagement, and celebrate the unique village atmosphere that defines the area. The revival was met with enthusiasm, and the Hoedown has continued to grow each year, reconnecting new generations with a treasured local tradition.

Today’s Dundarave Hoedown proudly carries forward the spirit of its original roots. It embraces the role of a modern community celebration while enjoying support from many of the same businesses that launched the Hoedown all those decades ago. Live country and western music fills the air, barbecues and beer gardens create gathering spaces, local merchants participate enthusiastically, and family-friendly games and kids’ zones ensure that attendees of all ages feel welcome.

More than just a summer festival, the Dundarave Hoedown stands as a reflection of the community’s enduring desire to preserve its village identity in a rapidly evolving region. It serves as a bridge between past and present, honouring the traditions that first brought people together while continuing to strengthen the bonds that support local businesses and community pride today.

From its beginnings in the 1980s, through years of silence, to its successful revival in 2022, the Dundarave Hoedown remains a powerful symbol of Dundarave’s small-town spirit, resilience, and dedication to community.

In a changing world, some traditions matter more than ever and in Dundarave, the Hoedown continues to prove that community celebration never goes out of style.
