Wisdom teeth typically erupt in your late teens or early twenties, but early intervention often in high school age patients, before eruption, usually is the best time to have the wisdom teeth evaluated and possibly removed. A general dentist or  orthodontic specialist will most likely refer their patients to an Oral Surgeon for a consultation to determine if they’re ready to have their wisdom teeth removed before any of the following situations occur:

1. Chronic or Recurring gum infections

2. Pain due to biting against the gum tissue of partially erupted wisdom teeth

3. Risk of decay & periodontal disease

4. Bad breath associated with wisdom teeth (They’re hard to keep clean)

5. Pain & damage to adjacent teeth

6. Cyst formation and possible damage to the jawbone

7. Cardiovascular damage from chronic inflammation

8. Potential crowding of front teeth or a disruption of second molar eruption
