Yes, You’re Allowed to Pay Yourself!

One of the most common things small business owners do is treat themselves like the last bill to be paid. The business covers expenses, software, inventory, payroll, taxes, and somehow the owner is expected to “take what’s left.”  Unfortunately, that approach often creates unstable cash flow, personal financial stress, and can create unintended resentment toward the business itself.

The truth is, owner pay is not selfish – it’s part of building a healthy business!

You wouldn’t expect your staff to work for free (or next to nothing), so why would you expect that from yourself?

Owner compensation is part of infrastructure, not leftovers. Just like the other expenses required to keep the business running, intentional owner pay should be built into the financial system from the beginning.

When business owners avoid paying themselves consistently, personal expenses often start blending into business activity. Owners rely on random transfers, credit cards, or “borrowing” from the business without a plan to pay the business back. Over time, this makes it harder to understand true profitability, prepare for taxes, and make confident business decisions.

Creating a structured owner pay system helps stabilize both the business and the person running it. That structure may look different depending on the business stage and entity type. A newer business may start with a modest recurring owner draw. An established S-Corp may require formal payroll and reasonable compensation. The important part is intentional consistency.

A smaller recurring owner payment often creates more stability than waiting to see what’s left over each month. Even starting small, but staying consistent, creates healthier habits and clearer financial visibility than unpredictable withdrawals. Business owners often feel guilty paying themselves, especially during growth seasons. Sustainable businesses require sustainable owners. When owners are financially strained, decision-making becomes reactive, stress increases, and long-term planning suffers.

Paying yourself is not taking from the business. When done intentionally, it is part of strengthening it!

A sustainable business starts with a sustainable owner. You got this!
