What Every Resident Should Know Before Heading to the Polls
The 2026 Municipal Election will look very different for Kingsville voters.
For the first time since amalgamation, residents will return to in-person voting using paper ballots, marking a significant change from the vote-by-mail and online voting systems used in previous elections.
Whether you’re planning to cast your ballot, considering a run for office, or simply want to better understand how local government impacts your daily life, here’s what you need to know.
A New Way to Vote
On October 26, 2026, Kingsville residents will elect:
- One Mayor
- One Deputy Mayor
- Five Councillors (at-large)
- School Board Trustees
One of the biggest changes this year is the introduction of “Vote Anywhere.” Rather than being assigned to a specific polling station, eligible voters can cast their ballot at whichever voting location is most convenient for them.
To vote, residents should bring:
- Their Voter Information Letter (VIL)
- One piece of valid identification

Thinking About Running for Council?
Many people who care deeply about their community consider running for office at some point. Before taking that step, it’s important to understand what municipal government does—and doesn’t do.
Municipal councillors serve three primary roles:
Representative – Listening to residents and bringing community concerns forward.
Policy-Maker – Directing the creation of by-laws, policies, and long-term plans for the municipality.
Steward – Making responsible decisions about public resources and taxpayer dollars.
Council Members must be prepared to make decisions that benefit the municipality as a whole, even when individual interests may differ.
Prospective candidates should also recognize the significant time commitment involved. While municipal council is often considered a part-time role, many members dedicate more than 20 hours per week to Council and Committee meetings, committees, community events, addressing constituent concerns, and ongoing education.
Why Local Government Matters
While federal and provincial governments often dominate headlines, municipal government has the most direct impact on our everyday lives.
The roads we drive on, the water we drink, garbage collection, parks, recreation programs, by-law enforcement, and community services all fall under municipal responsibility.
Perhaps most importantly, local government is also the most accessible. Residents can attend council meetings, speak with elected officials, and directly participate in decisions that shape the future of their community.
Getting Involved Matters More Than Ever
In today’s increasingly polarized political climate, some people may feel discouraged from participating in politics. However, municipalities rely on engaged residents who bring fresh ideas, practical solutions, and a genuine desire to serve.
Whether that means running for office, attending council meetings, volunteering on a committee, or simply voting on Election Day, community involvement remains one of the most effective ways to create positive change close to home.
The future of Kingsville belongs to all of us—and it starts with participation.
