5 Questions Every Couple Should Ask Before Moving In Together

Before you schedule that U-Haul, have an honest conversation about these five questions:

  1. Are we excited about building a shared life – or hoping living together will fix an existing problem?
  2. Do we have clarity about our long-term commitment, or are we moving into it?
  3. What does “moving in together” mean for our future? Are we truly on the same page?
  4. Are there practical pressures – a lease ending, finances, distance – driving this more than relationship readiness?
  5. If there were zero outside pressure, would we still choose to move in right now?

There are no perfect answers. But the conversation itself matters enormously.

When to Talk to a Couples Therapist First

If any of these sound familiar, a professional check-in might be worth it:

  • You’ve been going back and forth about whether to move in
  • One of you is more ready than the other
  • Recurring arguments haven’t been fully resolved
  • You’re unclear about your long-term future together
  • You want to start this chapter with a strong, intentional foundation

At Rose Hanna Counseling Services, we work with couples in person and via telehealth – using evidence-based approaches like the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused  Therapy (EFT) to help relationships thrive through every transition.

The Bottom Line

Moving in together is one of the most exciting (and sometimes terrifying!) milestones in a relationship. Research is clear that why you’re doing it matters – because your reason reflects the current health of your relationship.

So before you start packing boxes, have the conversation. Ask the hard questions. And if you need a little support along the way – that’s exactly what we’re here for.
