5 Tips for a Smoother Home Renovation (From Someone Who’s Seen It All)

Let’s be honest…living through a renovation isn’t always glamorous.

At some point you’ll probably be making coffee in a temporary kitchen, wondering if you’ll ever find your favorite spatula again, or questioning whether you really needed to empty every cabinet in the house. (Spoiler alert: you did.)

The good news? It’s completely normal.

After guiding hundreds of renovation projects, I’ve learned that the smoothest projects aren’t necessarily the ones without challenges, they’re the ones where homeowners know what to expect and have a team they trust walking alongside them with clear communication every step of the way.

Here are five pieces of advice I share with nearly every client before we get started.

1. Don’t Rush the Planning

I know you’re excited to see demo day arrive (trust me, I get excited too!), but taking a little extra time before construction begins pays off in a big way.

Choosing finishes, confirming layouts, and making decisions ahead of time helps keep your project moving and minimizes those last-minute surprises that nobody enjoys.

2. Embrace the “Messy Middle”

There’s always a moment in every renovation where it feels like your home looks worse than when you started.

That’s normal!

Construction is a process, and things have to come apart before they can come together. I always encourage homeowners to keep their eyes on the finish line because that’s where the magic happens.

3. Ask the Question

If something pops into your head at 8:00 in the morning—or even 8:00 at night—write it down and ask.

There are no silly questions during a renovation. Communication keeps everyone on the same page, and the more we talk, the smoother everything tends to go.

4. Remember Why You Started

When you’re washing dishes in the laundry sink or stepping around stacks of flooring, it’s easy to wonder, “Will this all be worth it?”

The answer is almost always yes.

Soon enough, you’ll be cooking family dinners in the kitchen you’ve always dreamed of or starting your mornings in a bathroom that finally feels like your own little retreat.

5. Choose a Team You Trust

This is the one I can’t stress enough.

Beautiful homes are built by talented people, but exceptional renovation experiences are built on trust.

At Marlene & Co., our commitment has always been to keep projects on time, on budget, and to communicate openly every step of the way. We know this is more than just a project, it’s your home, your investment, and your everyday life.

Our job is to make sure that when the dust settles (literally), you not only love the finished space, but you actually enjoyed the journey getting there.
