Late-summer heat can be especially hard on batteries and cooling systems. A weak battery or neglected cooling system can leave a family stranded at the worst possible time. Addressing minor issues now is far less expensive than dealing with a breakdown later.
Preparing Students for College Travel
For families with college-bound students, vehicle reliability becomes even more important. Many students will be driving several hours from home for the first time. Before they leave for campus or head home for holidays, make sure they understand basic vehicle responsibilities.
Students should know how to check tire pressure, monitor warning lights, recognize fluid leaks and contact roadside assistance. Encourage them to keep emergency contact information, registration documents and insurance cards readily available.

When my own kids first got their driver’s licenses, I was a somewhat unpopular dad because I taught them how to use a jack and change a tire. Then I had them prove it. In the rain. At night. Why? Fall sports bring increased travel for many Lake Norman families. Whether it’s football, soccer, volleyball, cross-country or marching band events, vehicles often become transportation hubs for students and equipment.
Before heading to away games or tournaments, verify tire pressures, inspect brakes and confirm all exterior lights are working properly. If you’re towing a trailer or carrying additional cargo, ensure everything is secure and within weight limits.
Safety First
