Europe’s rivers are home to several beloved cruise lines such as Viking, AmaWaterways, Uniworld, Avalon Waterways, Tauck and so forth. Each with its own personality. Choosing the right one depends on your travel style, budget, interests, and the season of which you are dreaming. That is where a travel advisor (hello!) comes in handy.
This spring, my husband and I sailed the classic Danube route with AmaWaterways aboard the AmaReina. It was truly a magical experience for all of us travelers. AmaWaterways has this boutique, warmly curated atmosphere that makes you feel like a guest, not a passenger. The ship holds up to one hundred and sixty guests with about fifty crew members, but because we traveled early in the season, we shared the journey with just one hundred and ten fellow travelers. It felt spacious, personal, and wonderfully social. We met people from all over the U.S., Canada, Japan, Mexico, and beyond.

Our adventure began with a pre-cruise stay (This is optional) in Prague, where Gothic spires and modern life blend eAortless. We enjoyed a folklore dinner, beer tasting (when in Prague), and a sobering visit to the Terezin concentration camp. On our final day departing from Prague, we stopped in Regensburg. It is a UNESCO World Heritage gem before
boarding the ship in Vilshofen. The cruise kicked oA with a welcome cocktail reception, complete with live piano music and warm introductions from the captain, crew, and our cruise manager, whom we had already grown fond of during our land stay. It was the perfect beginning to a week that promised connection, culture, and a whole lot of charm.
Over the next seven days, we drifted through Vilshofen, Wachau Valley, Linz, Vienna, Bratislava, and finally Budapest. Each stop had its own personality, but what truly set the experience apart was AmaWaterways’ thoughtful balance of activity and relaxation. Every day, you choose your pace: gentle tours with minimal walking, regular tours with classic city strolls and moderate hikes, or active excursions for those who want to earn their dessert. You can think of those as long hikes or biking adventures. And if you are feeling extra fancy, AmaWaterways oAers optional add-on experiences, like an enchanting orchestra performance at the Strauss House in Vienna. Trust me, it is worth every note, especially if you are a classical music enthusiast.

Onboard, life was just as delightful. You could curl up in the library, indulge in a spa treatment, join a yoga class, or simply lounge on the sundeck with a glass of wine and a new friend and new conversation. A small pool oAered a refreshing dip on warmer days, and occasional lectures like the history of the Wachau Valley which added depth to the journey.
And then there was the dining. Oh, the dining. Meals were beautifully prepared with regional ingredients, creative presentations, thoughtful wine pairings, and smart portion control. Breakfast changed daily, lunch and dinner were multi-course delights, and the Chef’s Table at the back of the ship oAered a special tasting menu by reservation. For anyone craving a taste of home, classics like hamburgers and grilled chicken were always available.

One of my favorite parts of river cruising is the camaraderie. Conversations flowed easily during happy hour or dinner, where open seating encouraged mingling. Never was a stranger met, and by the end of our cruise we exchanged contact information assuring “we will see each other again.” On the other hand, crew members often surprised couples celebrating anniversaries or milestones with special touches like a custom cake that made the whole dining room smile. After dinner, the lounge fills with performances. The atmosphere there is cozy and energetic. A couple of drinks and a great meal make it eAortless for everyone to mingle.
Our cruise manager Camille, originally from Normandy France, was the heart of the journey. Warm, witty, and endlessly attentive, she made every guest feel seen. Whether they were solo travelers, couples celebrating decades of marriage, or families exploring together. She snapped photos throughout the trip and shared them during our farewell celebration, creating a beautiful visual story of our week together. Her presence elevated the entire experience.
River cruising is more than a vacation. It is a way of experiencing cities, towns, villages that feel immersive, intimate, and deeply enriching.
