A Patient’s Guide to Premium Intraocular Lens Implants
We have the technology to restore excellent vision without glasses in patients (with or without a cataract) by exchanging the aging natural lens inside the eye with a high-tech lens implant. The technology to accomplish this has evolved tremendously over my career.
The natural lens of the eye ages, hardens, and clouds up. The technology to remove it involves making incisions to open the eye, evacuate the lens, and implant a new one. This was once done manually with blades and scissors, but now we have computer-driven lasers that make the incisions, correct astigmatism, and fragment the lens, making it easier to remove and requiring less energy. The less energy and manipulation inside the eye, the better and safer the procedure. Only a fraction of eye surgeons have access to and training in these femtosecond cataract lasers. Once the aged lens is removed, a premium intraocular lens implant is placed inside the eye in the same location.
Premium intraocular lenses are advanced lens implants designed to reduce dependence on glasses after cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange. Premium lenses are available in several categories: Toric Lenses (correct astigmatism), Extended Depth of Focus Lenses (create a continuous range of vision, particularly from distance through intermediate ranges), Multifocal Lenses (divide incoming light into multiple focal points, allowing patients to see at distance and near), Trifocal Lenses (provide dedicated focal points for distance, intermediate, and near vision), and Light Adjustable Lenses (permit fine-tuning of vision after surgery with specialized light treatments, improving refractive accuracy).
The ideal candidate for premium lens implants is a patient who desires greater independence from glasses, has realistic expectations, understands the benefits and limitations of available technologies, has healthy eyes or manageable ocular conditions, and is able and willing to invest in advanced technology to maximize sight.
Having access to all available technology distinguishes one practice from another. The technology used to measure the eye before surgery, the technology used to perform the surgery, matching the technology of the lens implants to the patient’s eyes and needs, and the skill of the surgeons are all paramount. Every patient’s visual needs are different. A retired pilot, golfer, avid reader, accountant, and photographer may each benefit from different lens choices.
Premium lenses can dramatically reduce, and often eliminate, dependence on glasses, but patients should understand that vision may continue to improve for weeks or even months after surgery. Some visual phenomena may occur initially, occasional glasses use may still be beneficial in specific situations, and individual results vary. The goal is maximizing visual freedom and quality of life.
Taking precise measurements before surgery, considering the overall condition of the eye and the patient’s visual goals when choosing a lens implant, and performing the procedure precisely, including the use of laser technology when selected by the patient, are key to the success enjoyed by the thousands of happy patients in our practice.
