Americans are living longer than ever before. The fastest growing segments of the older adult population include those age 90 and older, and people who reach 100. Longer lives are a remarkable achievement, made possible by advances in medicine, public health, safer communities, better nutrition and improved standards of daily living.

But successful aging is about more than adding years to life. It is about adding life to those years—maintaining independence, purpose, connection and well-being as we grow older.

At One Lincoln Park, we have created an initiative to explore the positive aspects of aging and support older adults as they continue to live meaningful, active and fulfilling lives. While genetics and medical history play a role, research shows that everyday habits—physical activity, nutrition, social connection, mental stimulation, sleep and stress management—can make a powerful difference over time.

Here are several practical ways to strengthen your health and well-being at any age.

1. Protect your physical mobility. Movement is one of the foundations of healthy aging. Include strength training, to help preserve muscle; balance exercises, such as tai chi or yoga, to reduce fall risk; and regular walking or other aerobic activity, to support heart and joint health.

2. Prioritize nutritious foods. A healthy eating pattern can support energy, strength and brain health. Focus on whole grains, lean proteins, berries, olive oil, leafy greens and other nutrient rich foods. Adequate protein and consistent hydration are especially important as we age.

3. Maintain deep social connections. Relationships are essential to emotional and physical well-being. Staying connected with family, friends, neighbors, faith communities, clubs or volunteer groups can reduce isolation and create a stronger sense of belonging.

4. Invest in cognitive and mental sharpness. Keep the mind engaged, through reading, puzzles, music, strategy games, classes or learning a new skill. Quality sleep and stress management also support brain health, emotional balance and overall resilience.

These habits can help people of all ages move toward successful aging.

One Lincoln Park’s programs, amenities and community centered lifestyle are designed to support residents as they stay active, connected and engaged. This year, as we celebrate 40 years of service to the community, we are proud to say that our residents are living proof that aging successfully is possible. Learn more at lincolnparkseniors.com.
