You have finally made the important decision to hire house cleaners, to help you take care of your home. You have gotten the cost estimate and scheduled the first visit. Congratulations! You have delegated well.
The night before your cleaners arrive, you look around…and the house is a wreck! You start picking up toys, loading the dishwasher and sweeping the kitchen floor.
But wait! Isn’t that what you have hired the professionals to handle? Yes, but it is important to understand what type of cleaning you can expect from the service that you have scheduled.
If you are wondering what pre-cleaning is necessary, first consider why you are asking the question. Do you not understand the service that you have requested, or are you afraid that the professionals will think your family is messy?
If it is the latter, don’t sweat it: Professional house cleaners are there to help.
If it is the former concern, review the chore list on the service that you have scheduled. The company should make such a list available, via their website or in any documents you received when you hired them (perhaps by email).
Remember: The professionals are coming to handle those harder, time consuming, scrubbing jobs. If they have to spend too much time “picking up” so they can find the floor to mop it, they have less time to focus on the priority.
Some Rules of Thumb
- Pick up major messes, like kids’ toys; clothes from chairs, floors and beds; magazines and papers from countertops and tables; and all-around clutter from the rooms being cleaned.
- Clear off bathroom vanities, as much as possible. Put personal items away, including medicines, irreplaceable decorative items or things that you don’t want others to handle.
With these basics done, your cleaning professional will be free to concentrate on the kind of cleaning that you have hired them to tackle.
Every home is unique. After the first clean, be sure to provide feedback and make any adjustments to the chore list for upcoming visits. After two or three visits, expectations will be clear, and the visit will become a welcome and helpful routine…including the “picking up” part!
