Every August, families across Rock Hill work through the same checklist to prepare for a successful school year. Between shopping trips, sports schedules, transportation plans, and last-minute summer activities, there is a lot to keep track of.
But there is one item that rarely makes the list until it becomes urgent:
A child’s dental and orthodontic development.
Many orthodontic concerns develop gradually. Crowding becomes more noticeable as permanent teeth erupt. Bite problems can affect how teeth function and wear. Some children develop crossbites, while others have permanent teeth that are delayed, blocked out, or unable to erupt normally. Because these changes often occur slowly, they can be easy to overlook.
One of the most common things I hear from parents is:
“We’ve been talking about scheduling an orthodontic consultation for months.”
I completely understand why.
Today’s parents are balancing more responsibilities than ever before, and orthodontics often becomes one more decision on an already crowded list. What many families don’t realize is that they don’t need to have all the answers before scheduling an evaluation. In fact, the purpose of the consultation is to answer questions – not create more of them.
As someone who grew up in Rock Hill and now has the privilege of caring for families in the same community, my goal is simple: provide clarity, eliminate uncertainty, and help parents make informed decisions with confidence. Orthodontic evaluations at our office are complimentary, and if treatment is needed, we are happy to help families understand available insurance and South Carolina Medicaid benefits.
So as you work through your back-to-school checklist this year, consider adding one more item:
Know how your child’s smile is growing.
Sometimes peace of mind is the most valuable thing an evaluation can provide.
