Is Your House Haunted … or Is It Electrical?

October is the season for things that go bump in the night. But when the lights start flickering, an outlet makes a mysterious buzzing sound or a breaker seems to have a mind of its own, you might want to hold off on calling the paranormal investigators.

Some of the strangest things that happen around the house have a perfectly reasonable explanation: your electrical system.

So, before you blame the ghosts, here are a few “hauntings” that may actually be your home trying to tell you something.

The Flickering Lights

A flickering light bulb is practically required in every haunted house movie. In your actual house, though, it shouldn’t be a regular occurrence.

Sometimes the culprit is as simple as a loose bulb or a bulb that needs replacing. But if multiple lights are flickering, they dim when you turn on an appliance or the problem keeps returning, there could be an issue with the circuit, wiring or electrical connections.

If changing the bulb doesn’t solve the mystery, it may be time to bring in a professional.

The Mysterious Buzzing Sound

Hear a faint buzzing or humming coming from a switch, outlet or electrical panel? Unfortunately, that probably isn’t a ghost trying to communicate.

Electricity should generally do its job quietly. Buzzing can sometimes point to a loose connection, overloaded circuit or another electrical issue that deserves attention, especially if the sound is new or getting louder.

And if you notice buzzing along with heat, discoloration or a burning smell, don’t ignore it.

The Breaker With a Mind of Its Own

You reset the breaker. Everything comes back on. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, it trips again.

Cue the spooky music.

Circuit breakers are actually designed to trip when they detect a problem, so a breaker that repeatedly shuts off isn’t being temperamental. It may be responding to an overloaded circuit, faulty appliance or another issue within the electrical system.

Instead of repeatedly flipping it back on and hoping for the best, find out what’s causing the problem.

The Outlet That Feels … Off

Loose plugs, warm outlets, scorch marks or outlets that suddenly stop working all deserve a closer look.

Older homes can be especially full of electrical surprises thanks to aging wiring, past renovations and DIY projects completed by previous owners. You may have no idea what’s hiding behind those walls until something starts acting strangely.

Consider unexplained electrical changes your home’s way of waving a little red flag.
