There was a time when nearly every kitchen included a traditional corner walk-in pantry. Practical, yes, but often deep, dim, and difficult to manage. Open shelves became crowded, items disappeared to the back, and once a year we would uncover long-forgotten ingredients in a necessary purge. A door wasn’t a design feature, it was simply a way to contain the chaos.
Today, that thinking is shifting in the most beautiful way.
The pantry is becoming something far more intentional — a refined extension of the kitchen that blends storage with function and even a touch of ritual. In the homes we’re currently designing, these spaces are evolving into a thoughtful combination of pantry and butler’s kitchen, supporting everything that happens behind the scenes.
As our kitchens open more fully into living and entertaining spaces, there’s a growing need for somewhere to hold the movement, the preparation, and yes, the occasional mess. The pantry has stepped into that role.
A Space That Works and Feels Beautiful
What I love most is that these spaces are no longer purely utilitarian. They have become personal. We begin by considering how each client moves through their day. Morning coffee, school lunches, evening meals, weekend gatherings — each daily rhythm informs the design. From there, we layer in elements that support those habits with both ease and intention. A secondary sink and dishwasher can transform how a kitchen functions, especially when entertaining. It creates a tucked-away space for preparation and clean-up, allowing the main kitchen to remain calm and welcoming.
In many cases, we’re also incorporating additional refrigeration. This may include a full-sized fridge and freezer or a pair of fridge drawers. It’s a subtle shift that frees up the main kitchen while offering incredible flexibility when hosting or preparing meals ahead of time.

Personalized stations have also become a favourite feature. A dedicated coffee nook is always lovely, but recently we designed a smoothie station for a client! It was complete with a blender, organized dry goods, and integrated refrigeration for fresh ingredients. It’s tailored, efficient, and fits their lifestyle perfectly.
Open shelving, when done thoughtfully, can be both practical and beautiful. Shallower shelves (around 12 inches deep) allow everything to remain visible and accessible. No more forgotten items tucked out of reach.
Finally, there is always an opportunity to add character.
A Place To Be Creative
Because the pantry sits just out of sight, it offers a wonderful moment to be a little more expressive. Coloured millwork, a soft patterned wallpaper, or an unexpected backsplash can bring warmth and personality to the space. Decorative shelving for glassware, cookbooks, or collected pieces adds a sense of charm and lived-in beauty.
Even the smallest details like cup hooks, gallery rails or the finish of a handle, can elevate the experience of being in the space.
At its heart, a well-designed pantry is about more than storage. It’s about creating a space that works hard, supports your routines, and still feels thoughtful and special. It should reflect how you live—your mornings, your evenings, your way of gathering—and offer a sense of ease in the everyday.
Most often, it doesn’t require a full kitchen renovation. Sometimes, it’s simply about carving out a small, intentional space that transforms how your home functions as a whole.
