Caregiving is one of the most loving things a person can do. It is also one of the most exhausting.
Many families are quietly carrying the weight of caring for an aging parent at home—managing medications, meals, doctor appointments, and daily routines, often while also holding down jobs and raising children. Summer has a way of making that tension more visible. Weddings, reunions, and long-planned trips begin appearing on the calendar. And for many caregiving families, the same question surfaces every time: what do we do about Mom or Dad while we are gone?
For some families, the answer is to simply not go. Vacations get canceled. The caregiver quietly sets aside their own needs because there does not seem to be another option.
But there often is. It is called respite care—a short stay in an assisted living community, typically two to four weeks, while the family travels or takes a needed break. Respite apartments are typically fully furnished, so there is no need to move furniture or set up a new space. The senior receives professional care, meals, and daily support in a safe and welcoming environment. The family gets to be fully present on their trip without worry.
I recently helped a local family with exactly this situation. Their mother had early-stage dementia and needed daily support. The family had an important overseas trip and together we found her a respite apartment in a nearby assisted living community. She discovered that several residents shared her love of bridge, made new friends quickly, and received a standing invitation to return anytime. The family is already planning a second respite stay because the first experience was so good for her.
Respite care is not always easy to find. Not every community offers it, and availability can be limited. That is where having a local advisor makes a real difference.
If your family has a summer trip coming up and is wondering how to care for a loved one while you are away, I would be glad to help you explore your options—whether that is respite care or any other aspect of senior living planning.
