What Happened This Summer?

They thought they had it handled.

Their mother had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, but the family felt like she was doing reasonably well. A caregiver came by a few hours each week, and from a distance everything seemed stable. Then summer came, and the family spent real time with her. Walks around the neighborhood, dinners out, and unhurried afternoons at home.

And what they saw during those hours changed everything.

The confusion was more frequent and more significant than the family had realized. Simple conversations were harder. Familiar routines were slipping. It became clear that she was not safe living on her own anymore. Within a week we found a wonderful board and care home where she could receive the consistent care and oversight she needed. The family reports that her confusion has continued to progress, and they are deeply grateful they acted when they did.

That story reflects one of the most common patterns I see. Cognitive decline has a quiet way of progressing in the background. When a parent is seen only occasionally, it is easy to miss how much has changed. The caregiver hours feel like enough. The last visit seemed fine. The assumption holds until extended time together reveals a different reality.

Summer has a unique way of closing that gap. Longer visits and relaxed afternoons create the kind of unhurried observation that a short Sunday visit cannot provide. Sometimes what families see is reassuring. And sometimes it is a turning point.

If you returned home from a summer visit with a quiet concern you have not known what to do with, do not set it aside. Here are a few things worth reflecting on. Did your parent repeat the same stories or questions within a short period of time? Did they seem confused about dates or familiar places? Did they appear more withdrawn than usual? Was their home less organized than you would have expected? These are not definitive diagnoses, but they are signals worth taking seriously.

The window for making thoughtful, unhurried decisions is always better before a crisis than after one. I work with families across South Orange County to help them understand their options and find the right care setting for their loved one. There is no cost for that conversation.

Call me or visit me online. What you noticed this summer deserves more than a worrying thought on the drive home.
