Why I Wrote ‘On the Other Side of the Fence’

As a licensed therapist, I have spent years helping children, teens, adults, and families navigate life’s challenges. Throughout my work, one theme continues to surface: comparison. I have watched children believe another child has the better family, more friends, or the perfect life, while adults quietly carry the very same belief. Seeing this pattern over and over inspired me to write my first children’s book, On the Other Side of the Fence. I wanted to create a story that helps children—and the adults reading beside them—develop gratitude, perspective, and resilience before comparison becomes the lens through which they see the world.

I remember one young client who spent an entire session talking about how everyone else’s life seemed happier than their own. As we gently explored those thoughts, they began to realize they were comparing their everyday life to what they imagined someone else’s life to be. That conversation stayed with me because it reflects what so many of us experience. We fill in the blanks with a fantasy that someone else has it easier, when in reality every family, every child, and every person carries struggles we cannot see.

Today, children are growing up in a world where comparison begins earlier than ever. They compare toys, clothes, friendships, achievements, and eventually themselves through social media. Carefully curated photos and highlight reels make it easy to believe happiness exists somewhere else. As adults, we are not immune either. We chase the next promotion, the bigger home, the dream vacation, or the next milestone believing fulfillment is just beyond our reach. Comparison convinces us the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the ability to pause and appreciate what is already within their own lives. Gratitude does not ignore hardship—it helps us recognize joy even in imperfect seasons. Perspective reminds us that everyone has challenges hidden behind closed doors. When parents model gratitude, speak kindly about themselves, celebrate effort over perfection, and encourage meaningful connection instead of constant comparison, they help build resilience that lasts a lifetime.

That is the heart behind On the Other Side of the Fence. I did not write it simply to tell a story; I wrote it to start conversations. My hope is that families read it together and discover that true happiness is not found by wishing for someone else’s life. It is found by appreciating our own, embracing our unique journey, and recognizing that our differences often become our greatest strengths.

As both a therapist and a member of our local community, my hope is that this book encourages families to slow down, have meaningful conversations, and remember that the richest parts of life are often already on our own side of the fence.
