When my wife, Anita, and I took over L’îlette last year, we knew we were becoming part of something special.
The café was already a much-loved Qualicum Beach establishment, known for its French pastries and welcoming atmosphere. We wanted to preserve the quality and character people valued while introducing some new ideas of our own, including renovations and an expanded breakfast and lunch menu.
I also want to acknowledge that the transition was not seamless.
Taking over an established bakery, completing renovations, developing new processes and navigating staffing challenges took time. During that period, some customers did not receive the consistency or quality they had come to expect from L’îlette. We heard that feedback, and we recognize that some of it was warranted.
Rather than ignore those concerns, we took them seriously. We have worked steadily with our team to improve our processes, strengthen consistency and make sure everything leaving our kitchen reflects the standards we want L’îlette to represent.
Today, our bakers begin very early each morning, preparing our sourdough bread and freshly made pastries from scratch. We use organic, freshly milled grains and carefully selected, high-quality ingredients to create breads with exceptional flavour and texture. Our pastry selection changes regularly and includes a variety of sweet and savoury options made fresh each day.
We have also developed a full breakfast and lunch menu, making L’îlette a comfortable place to enjoy a relaxed meal, meet a friend or simply stop in for a pastry and coffee. Our coffee is organic and roasted here on Vancouver Island, and we are proud to serve locally brewed kombucha as well.
Anita and I are grateful to be part of the Qualicum Beach community, and we warmly invite local residents who have not visited us recently to come back and experience L’îlette again.
We are proud of how far we have come, confident in what our team is producing today and committed to continuing to improve. Most importantly, we look forward to earning your trust and serving this community for many years to come.
