As the back-to-school season begins, many students are preparing for another exciting academic year. For those entering their senior year of high school, graduation and college will arrive sooner than expected. Whether you’re just beginning your college journey or already narrowing down your options, now is the ideal time to take steps that can make higher education more affordable.

Start Saving Early

It’s never too early to begin saving for college expenses. Tuition, textbooks, housing, transportation, and other costs can add up quickly, but even small, consistent savings can make a meaningful difference over time.

If you’re working part-time or during the summer, consider opening a savings account and setting up automatic deposits from each paycheck. Contributing as little as $15 per week can steadily build a fund to help cover tuition, books, school supplies, or other college-related expenses. Developing a regular savings habit now can also help build strong financial skills for the future.

Explore Scholarship Opportunities

Scholarships are one of the best ways to reduce the cost of higher education because they do not need to be repaid. Students should begin researching scholarship opportunities as early as possible and apply to as many as they qualify for.

Start by speaking with your high school guidance counselor about scholarships offered through your school, local organizations, community groups, employers, and foundations. Many scholarships recognize academic achievement, leadership, community service, athletics, artistic talent, or career interests.

Apply for the Empire One FCU Scholarship

As part of its commitment to supporting education in the communities it serves, Empire One Federal Credit Union is proud to offer its annual scholarship program.

Scholarship applications will be accepted through March 31, 2027, and two local students will each receive a $500 scholarship to help offset college expenses and invest in their future.

Students are encouraged to review the eligibility requirements and submit their applications before the deadline.

A little planning today can create greater opportunities tomorrow. By saving consistently and taking advantage of available scholarships, students can reduce the financial burden of college and focus on achieving their educational goals.
