Fall is knocking on the door, and we have no choice but to answer it! I have put together a list of home maintenance tasks you should consider tackling soon. Many tradesmen are booking up quickly, so now is the time to get on their schedules.
1. Clear your gutters: Once the leaves have fallen, make sure your gutters are cleaned before winter. This helps prevent ice dams, which were a major issue last year.
2. Winterize outdoor faucets: Be sure to shut off the valves for your outdoor faucets. There should be a shut-off valve inside your basement that controls them. If you cannot find one, contact a plumber to install one.
3. Inspect your roof: Check for any missing or damaged shingles. Many roofers now use drones to inspect roofs, which provides a safe, thorough evaluation and keeps you off the ladder!
4. Seal windows and doors: Apply caulk around your windows (both interior and exterior). Check the weatherstripping on your doors and replace any that is old or worn out.
5. Service your furnace: Have your furnace cleaned and your air filters changed; it makes a significant difference in efficiency.
6. Clean your chimney: Creosote can build up in your chimney and become a fire hazard if it ignites. Keep your fireplace safe for those cozy evenings by ensuring it is clean before the season begins.
Get some, if not all, of these items on your list. Take care of the tasks you feel comfortable doing yourself, and schedule the rest with a professional. Don’t wait too long—they will be booking out several weeks in advance before you know it!

I may be biased, but I encourage you to have your kids use Legos and other building toys. It not only helps with their motor skills, but it also keeps them off their phones! Building things by hand engages a different part of the brain. There are many projects online tailored to various age levels, and there is a great sense of reward when a project is completed. I still get happy when I finish a project that turns out better than I expected!
