Help Your Leather Last

Whether it’s your favorite leather jacket, a designer purse, or that pair of boots you love to wear, your leather items are an investment. High-quality leather can last a lifetime with the proper care. Here’s a proactive guide to help your leather last.

Leather Jackets

  • Opt for heavy, wide wooden or padded hangers to prevent your jacket’s shoulders from getting stretched out.
  • If you’re storing your leather coat, use a breathable fabric garment bag. Avoid plastic, which doesn’t allow the leather to get the air it needs.
  • Did you get caught in one of those pop-up Ohio storms? Let your jacket air dry away from direct heat.
  • Do you notice stains, odors, or a faded finish? Bring your coat to Fox Cleaners. We can recondition it and help it last longer.

Purses & Handbags

  • Avoid wearing newer dark denim with a lightly colored leather purse. The color may transfer to the bag, causing discoloration.
  • When you’re storing your bag, empty it and fill it with plain tissue paper to help maintain the shape.
  • If you need to spot clean it, use a slightly damp cloth to avoid leaving marks.
  • Fox Cleaners can help you with makeup stains, ink stains, or worn-down edges. Our leather experts have the tools and solutions to make your purse or handbag look new again.

Leather Shoes & Boots

  • Avoid wearing the same leather footwear two days in a row. Providing 24 hours to air them out between wearing will extend their life.
  • Add a shoe tree to your closet. A cedar shoe tree will absorb moisture and help your shoes keep their shape.
  • Wipe down shoes and boots if they come into contact with winter road salt.
  • Fox Cleaners can help with scuffs and stains on your leather footwear and give your suede boots new life.

Quick Tips

  • Leather needs conditioning. You can condition leather items on your own after testing the conditioner on a small, inconspicuous place on your item. Fox Cleaners can also manage the conditioning process for you.
  • Store belts by hanging them by the buckle to avoid cracking.
  • Full-grain leather will develop a beautiful wear pattern over time, but “genuine” leather (a lower-grade leather that is usually “corrected” to mimic a higher grain) may not wear as well as time passes. All types of leather benefit from professional care.
