There are many options in planning an Alaskan vacation. As a Travel Advisor my knowledge and experience can help you decide the best way to see the 49th state. Is a cruise right for you? Below, I have listed some of the considerations that I will explore with you in our initial meeting.
- Ship size preference – Big ships offer more amenities, entertainment, and bigger crowds vs. small ship/expeditions which offer closer wildlife encounters, remote access, and fewer passengers.
- Departure point – Seattle or Vancouver? Each has different perks. Vancouver often means more time in the Inside Passage where Seattle can mean easier flights for many US travelers.
- Itinerary style – Round-trip cruise only, or a cruise + land tour (Denali, Fairbanks, glaciers) for the full Alaska experience
- Pace and activity level – Relaxed sightseeing vs. active excursions such as kayaking, hiking, flightseeing, or dog sledding.
- Budget and cabin type – Interior, ocean view, balcony, or suite? This affects both cost and experience significantly.
- Travel dates – Early season (May/June) tends to be less crowded and can mean whale migration timing; peak summer (July) has best weather odds; late season (Aug/Sept) can bring fall colors and Northern Lights possibilities.
- Who’s traveling – Couple, multi-gen family, solo, friends group? This shapes ship atmosphere recommendations (family-friendly big ship vs. quieter small ship).
- Ports of interest – Bucket list stops like Glacier Bay, Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Sitka, or more remote/less touristy options.

Maybe, you have already done the cruise portion and would like to go back to see one or all of the National Parks in Alaska. Did you know there are eight National Parks in Alaska? Only three of the parks connect to road systems. The rest require a boat or a plane to visit. There are great opportunities to get to many places via the Alaska Railway. Again, it is imperative that you make your travel plans early as the resources are very limited. There are only so many hotels, rental cars or motorhomes available.
