Every September, my inbox starts filling up with the same question: “Is it too late to book Christmas?”
The short answer? Usually…yes. At least if you’ve got your heart set on a specific destination or resort. Christmas travel is a bit like trying to get concert tickets at the last minute—you might get lucky, but you probably won’t love your options.
As a travel professional (and a mom), I’ve learned that Christmas travel isn’t just about escaping the cold. It’s about creating memories that last far longer than anything wrapped under the tree.
Don’t get me wrong—I love a cozy Christmas at home. But after scraping ice off the windshield, shovelling the driveway (again), and wrestling with tangled Christmas lights, a little sunshine starts sounding pretty appealing.
Holiday travel isn’t always picture-perfect. Airports are busy, flights are full, and someone will inevitably ask, “Are we there yet?” before you’ve even found your gate. But with a little planning, Christmas away can become one of your family’s favourite traditions.
One of the biggest mistakes I see is families waiting until the fall to book. Christmas is one of the busiest travel periods of the year, and the best flights, family suites, and resort availability are often gone months in advance.
So where are families heading?
St. Lucia is perfect for those looking to combine relaxation with adventure. Explore the iconic Pitons, zip-line through the rainforest, soak in the island’s famous mud baths, or simply spend the day on one of its beautiful beaches. It’s the perfect mix of excitement and downtime for families of all ages.
If Europe is calling, Portugal is a fantastic choice. From Lisbon’s festive lights to the stunning Algarve coastline, you’ll find history, incredible food, welcoming locals, and plenty of holiday charm—without some of the crowds you’ll find elsewhere in Europe.
For families craving warm weather and an easy getaway, Jamaica continues to be a Canadian favourite. Think waterfalls, river rafting, live music, family-friendly all-inclusive resorts, and the simple joy of having someone else cook Christmas dinner…and do the dishes.
If your family prefers snow over sand, ski destinations across Canada and Europe offer cozy villages, breathtaking scenery, and plenty of hot chocolate after a day on the slopes. There are some great all-inclusive options in key destinations to explore!
The truth is, the destination isn’t what makes the trip unforgettable.
It’s breakfast that turns into a two-hour conversation. It’s laughing over a game of cards by the pool. It’s watching your kids discover a new place through wide eyes and endless curiosity.
Travel has a wonderful way of slowing life down. It reminds us to put our phones away, reconnect, and spend quality time together—something that’s often the greatest gift of all.
So this Christmas, instead of asking what to buy, maybe ask where you’d like to go.
Because while the toys eventually get forgotten, the stories from a family adventure become part of your family’s history.
