First detected in Napa County in 2019, the beetle has since spread into several neighboring counties, including Marin County, where it has now been confirmed in Novato. The Mediterranean oak borer primarily attacks Valley Oaks and other white oak species, although stressed or weakened oaks are generally the most vulnerable. The beetle tunnels beneath the bark while introducing fungi that interfere with the tree’s ability to transport water and nutrients. Over time, this combination can cause significant decline and, in some cases, tree death.
Homeowners should watch for several warning signs, including thinning leaves, dying branches in the upper canopy, increased woodpecker activity, small round exit holes in the bark, and fine sawdust around the base of the tree or in bark crevices. While these symptoms do not always indicate the presence of the Mediterranean oak borer, they are signs that a tree should be evaluated by a qualified professional.
Keeping trees healthy remains one of the best defenses against many insects and diseases. Proper watering during dry periods, avoiding unnecessary root disturbance, and addressing structural issues before they become major problems can all help reduce stress on mature trees. Regular inspections are especially important for properties with large native oaks.
