Retail has changed dramatically over the last decade. Shopping has become faster, easier and more convenient than ever before. While convenience certainly has its place, I have learned that people are looking for something technology cannot replace: connection.
That belief has shaped every decision we have made at M23. From the beginning, we chose not to build our business around the traditional brick and mortar experience. Instead, we built it around relationships and VIP shopping. We believed people deserved a shopping experience that felt personal, whether through a private appointment, a workplace event or a community gathering.
Over the years, one lesson has become very clear: people may forget what they purchased, but they rarely forget how you made them feel. That idea extends far beyond retail. Businesses that invest in meaningful employee appreciation create stronger workplace cultures. Schools that intentionally celebrate teachers and staff remind them that their work is valued. Organizations that turn fundraising into an experience rather than simply asking for donations can build deeper community support because people feel connected to the cause.
As a husband and wife owned business, some of our most rewarding experiences have grown into relationships we look forward to year after year. Our ongoing partnerships span many different parts of the community, from supporting the Louisiana Pediatric Cardiology Foundation through fundraising and community events, to celebrating the teachers and staff of Prairieville High School through appreciation events and creating employee experiences with businesses such as Lamar Advertising and Surgical Specialty Center. Each partnership looks different because every organization and group has different needs. Being invited back and watching these relationships grow is what makes them so meaningful.
One piece of advice I would offer any business owner or community leader is to stop asking, “What can I give people?” and start asking, “How can I make people feel?”
The answer is rarely another promotional item or discount. More often, it is creating opportunities for people to gather, celebrate, connect and feel appreciated. Teacher and staff appreciation, ladies nights, employee celebrations, fundraisers and company holiday gatherings can become much more meaningful when the focus shifts from what is being given to the experience being created.
I believe this is where local business is headed. People want authenticity. They want businesses that are invested in their communities and willing to collaborate rather than simply sell. When local businesses, schools, healthcare organizations and nonprofits find creative ways to support one another, the entire community benefits.
That has always been our goal at M23, and it will continue to guide everything we do. At the end of the day, what we sell may have started the business, but the relationships we have built are what make it M23.
