Drive down Commerce Drive in Murray and you’ll come upon barns, garages, home studios, and sheds in every size and color imaginable. The open-air showroom finds residence at a business that has built their trusted brand right here for 45 years. That’s Tuff Shed, and while the name might be known nationally, the story of this particular location is a distinctly local one.
Kat Windhorst has been part of that team for almost three years, joining Tuff Shed after a career in sales. It didn’t take her long to understand why some of her coworkers have stuck around for decades. “It’s a great company to work for,” she said. And she means it structurally, too: Tuff Shed is employee-owned, so everyone on staff holds stock in the company. “Everyone just kind of has a feeling of ownership to it,” Kat explained, and that shared investment shows in how the team treats every customer who walks onto the lot or dials their number.

What makes a Tuff Shed different from a prefab box off a big-box store shelf comes down to the details most people never think to ask about. Every building is custom designed, with a 3D configurator that lets customers choose colors and layouts and genuinely make the space their own. The doors — often the first thing to fail on a lower-quality shed — are patented, built with galvanized steel frames that won’t warp or twist, hinges strong enough to support over 1,500 pounds, and handles designed so kids can’t lock themselves in. Framing is set 16 inches on center, the same standard used in home construction. “You just know you’re going to get a really high-quality product,” Kat said.
Behind that lot on Commerce Drive sits the full production operation. Tuff Shed’s entire prefab factory is here where the buildings are constructed in sections before being delivered and assembled on-site, piece by piece, so even tight backyards aren’t a problem. It’s a detail Kat loves sharing with customers. “Every once in a while, you get to show people back into the factory, and they can see how it’s made,” she said. “That’s a really cool thing.”

The sheds themselves have taken on lives far beyond storage. Kat has helped design custom builds with 14-foot dormers, finished-out home offices with residential doors and house wrap, and even a physician’s office built beside his dispensary workplace. “People can do really cool things with them,” she said, “in terms of office space, finishing them after the fact.” No two projects on the lot tell quite the same story.
Tuff Shed’s ties to Murray go beyond the building itself. The team shows up at local home shows throughout the year and has become a fixture at the community’s annual art festival — one of Kat’s favorite parts of the job. Four and a half decades of doing business in the same neighborhood means you build a familiar presence and that in turn has built trust.
