As parents, getting ready for a new school year often means shopping for supplies, organizing schedules, and making sure everyone is prepared for the first day back. While backpacks and notebooks are important, there’s one item that can have an even bigger impact on your child’s success in the classroom: an eye exam.

Many parents assume that if their child can see the board or passes a school vision screening, their vision is fine. But vision is much more than simply seeing clearly. Reading, writing, focusing, tracking words across a page, using digital devices, and participating in classroom activities all depend on healthy visual skills. In fact, experts estimate that much of classroom learning is presented visually, making good vision an essential part of academic success.

Vision Problems Aren’t Always Easy to Spot

One of the biggest challenges with children’s vision is that they often don’t realize anything is wrong. If they’ve always seen the world a certain way, they may assume that’s how everyone sees it.

Instead of saying they can’t see clearly, children often adapt to their vision problems or develop behaviors that can be mistaken for something else.

Some common signs your child may be struggling with their vision include:

  • Squinting to see distant objects
  • Complaining of headaches or tired eyes
  • Holding books, tablets, or phones very close
  • Frequently losing their place while reading
  • Difficulty concentrating during homework
  • Rubbing their eyes often
  • Avoiding reading or other close-up work
  • Declining grades or frustration with schoolwork

These symptoms don’t always mean a child has a vision problem, but they are good reasons to schedule an eye exam. Identifying any issues early can help prevent unnecessary struggles both in and out of the classroom.

Why School Vision Screenings Aren’t Enough

Many schools perform basic vision screenings, and while these screenings are valuable, they’re not a substitute for a comprehensive eye exam.

School screenings are designed to identify obvious vision concerns, but they don’t evaluate overall eye health or detect many problems that can affect learning. An eye exam looks at much more than distance vision, including how the eyes work together, focusing ability, eye coordination, and overall eye health.

A child may pass a school screening and still have vision issues that make reading, learning, or concentrating more difficult.

Understanding Myopia

One vision condition becoming increasingly common among children is myopia, also known as nearsightedness.

Children with myopia can usually see things up close but have difficulty seeing objects in the distance, such as classroom whiteboards or signs. Over the past several years, myopia has become much more common, likely due to a combination of genetics, increased screen time, and less time spent outdoors.

While glasses or contact lenses help children see clearly, they don’t stop myopia from progressing. As children grow, their prescription may continue to increase, which can raise the risk of certain eye health conditions later in life, including retinal problems, glaucoma, and other vision-threatening diseases.

The good news is that early detection gives families more options.

More Than Just Stronger Glasses

If your child is diagnosed with myopia, there are treatments available that do more than simply correct blurry vision.

Our practice offers myopia management, which focuses on helping slow the progression of nearsightedness as your child grows. By managing myopia early, we can help reduce how quickly the prescription changes while supporting healthier vision for the future.

Not every child is a candidate for the same treatment, which is why a comprehensive eye exam is the best place to start. We’ll evaluate your child’s vision, answer your questions, and recommend the approach that’s most appropriate for their needs.

Schedule Before the School Year Gets Busy

Back-to-school season is one of the busiest times of the year for eye care. Scheduling your child’s exam before classes begin allows you to choose a convenient appointment time and ensures there’s plenty of time to update glasses or discuss treatment options if needed.

Starting the school year with clear, comfortable vision helps set children up for success from day one. Whether your child needs new glasses, may benefit from myopia management, or simply needs their annual eye exam, taking care of their vision now can make a meaningful difference throughout the year.

A healthy school year begins with healthy eyes. Schedule your child’s comprehensive eye exam today and help them head back to school ready to learn, grow, and thrive.
