Common Concerns
Many patients are reluctant to have dental work for various reasons. Some of those reasons have been set aside by modern technology! Common concerns were: 1) I don’t like those rubber goopy impressions. 2) I don’t like having to go twice for one tooth. 3) I don’t like temporary crowns, they fall off. 4) I don’t like the dark edge that some crowns seem to have at the gum line. 5) If I get a crown, will I need a root canal?
Modern Technology
Dentistry is constantly evolving with technology driven results. The creation of intra-oral digital dental scanners has allowed dentists to scan teeth with a wand like video camera. This specialized camera captures real sized images that can be sent to the dental lab for design and crown creation. This eliminates the need in most cases for the rubber impression material in the mouth. After tooth preparation by the dentist, scans of the top teeth and bottom teeth are acquired in less than a minute and done. Now imagine if we could use that same scan to make the crown in the dental office with the same ceramic that the labs use! Your dentist could finish making a crown in one visit. The development of milling machines has done just that with millions of crowns being prepared and finished in one visit. Data from the scanner is processed and a crown design in the dental office in minutes. Then instructions are sent to the milling machine to create a crown for a block of ceramic with color to match your teeth. These all ceramic crowns require no metal layer so there is no dark edge at the gum line anymore.
Patient Appreciation
Patients comment frequently how nice it is to be finished in one visit. They don’t have drive to the office twice. They don’t need to be anesthetized twice. No need to worry about a temporary crown coming off, no temporary crown is needed. Many patients like to see the crown being made as they watch. Crowns are placed to protect the tooth under function. The need for root treatment is only when the pulp (center) of the tooth is infected from a cavity or tooth damage like a fracture. Teeth after root canal therapy usually have crowns placed for protection. Teeth that needs crowns do not automatically need root canal treatment.
