Two is company, three is a crowd. Like the beginning of an ageless joke, two dogs and a cat walk into a bar, and the rest is history. Derby the Dog, Noodles the Dog, and Scruffles the Cat are the members of this crew, with Rich being the lead man in charge. Rich has thumbs, so what he says, goes.

Rich knew he wanted one thing: adopt exactly one fluffy dog. While at Paws for Life, he was told that many dogs aren’t kept onsite. As soon as the sentence was spoken into existence, a blur of fur drifted around the corner and plopped his curly tailed bum right at Rich’s feet. Eye contact was made, and soul ties were formed.

“This is the dog I’ll take,” Rich stated, plain and simple. “Does he have any dog friends here?” he then asked, knowing from previous experiences that dogs often do well with a friend. The answer came, swaggering in from the back: a black-and-white cat, covered in scabs and a rash. Scruffles had found himself at the shelter at the same time as Derby. The two bonded and became fast friends. Rich’s original “want” turned into one short-haired pup and a feline. Shortly after arriving home, Scruffles’ stress-induced rash vanished.

Noodles came later, a foster fail who became best buds with the cat. “How could I adopt out this little chihuahua and take him away from Scruffles?” Rich laughs. “Everybody there knew I was going to keep him before I did.”

The three animals may not be old enough to walk into a bar, but they will indeed go down in history as Rich’s most favorite trio.
