What’s really inside a self-storage unit?
If you’ve never rented a storage unit, you might picture rows of boxes collecting dust. The reality is a lot more interesting.
Over the years, we’ve learned that what people store isn’t really about stuff. It’s about life. One family stores the boxes of holiday decorations that have been collected over three generations. Another stores their kayak and paddleboards so they can actually park in the garage and grab their gear from storage whenever the weather is perfect. One customer stores their vintage motorcycle along with all the parts and tools neatly organized until the project is finished. Another keeps family photos, heirlooms, and important documents in climate-controlled storage because Charleston’s heat and humidity aren’t exactly known for preserving memories.
Many DI residents store their boats that fill their weekends and summers with family and friends.
Then there are our favorite stories.

The wedding planner with a bustling business that quietly outgrew their home. The online retailer whose inventory started on a few shelves in the garage and now ships orders every day. The car detailer that needed just a little extra space to securely store their products and equipment. The weekend woodworker who wanted an extra garage to follow their passion.
What started as “just a little side hustle” became a real business.
Storage simply gave them room to grow.
That’s probably the biggest misconception about self storage. People think it’s about finding a place to put extra things. More often, it’s about creating space for whatever comes next in life…
- A new baby
- A home renovation
- An aging parent moving in
- A child leaving for college
- A growing business
Or maybe it’s just wanting your home to feel like… home again.

One thing we can tell you after meeting the many customers that come to our facility is this: almost every storage unit has a story behind it. Most are filled with chapters of someone’s life that are worth keeping.
So here’s a thought for this month.
The next time you open a closet that barely closes or walk around boxes in the garage, ask yourself a simple question: Is this taking up space in my house, or is it taking up space in my life?
Sometimes the answer isn’t to get rid of something you value. Sometimes it’s simply giving it a better place.
