At McGough & Company, creativity has always taken shape through fine jewelry, and for more than four decades, Montana sapphires have provided some of our greatest inspiration. Our family’s story in jewelry began in Arizona, where Sam and Donna McGough founded a jewelry manufacturing business in the 1970s. In 1985, they brought their passion for design and craftsmanship to Montana, opening Tomahawk Trading Company on Central Avenue in downtown Whitefish. There, Sam McGough became one of Montana’s earliest and most passionate advocates for the state gem, building a jewelry collection that showcased sapphires from every producing locality across the state. Approximately 75 percent of the store’s jewelry featured Montana sapphires. As the business grew, it eventually became McGough & Company, reflecting a family legacy of craftsmanship that continues today.
There is something uniquely meaningful about designing jewelry around a gemstone discovered beneath Montana soil. Each sapphire begins as a natural treasure, becoming something deeply personal—a ring marking an engagement, a pendant celebrating a milestone, or an heirloom passed to another generation.
Montana sapphires offer an extraordinary range of colors. Deposits at Rock Creek, Dry Cottonwood Creek, and along the Missouri River produce stones ranging from brilliant blues and teals to greens, yellows, pinks, and striking parti sapphires that reveal multiple colors within a single gem.
Among Montana’s sapphires, the legendary Yogo remains its rarest and most celebrated. Found only in Yogo Gulch in central Montana, these gems are known around the world for their naturally vivid blue color and exceptional clarity. Their beauty is unmistakably Montana. Designing with these stones requires more than simply choosing a setting. The shape, color, proportions, and personality of each sapphire influence the finished piece. Sometimes the gemstone inspires the design; other times we find the perfect stone for a customer’s vision. In either case, the process is a collaboration between nature, craftsmanship, and the person who will ultimately wear it.
Sapphires are particularly suited for jewelry meant to last. Ranking 9 on the Mohs scale, they are second only to diamonds in hardness, making them durable enough for pieces worn every day and passed from one generation to the next. Traditionally associated with wisdom, loyalty, and sincerity, they also carry a symbolism well suited to the meaningful moment’s jewelry so often represents.
For our family, however, Montana sapphires represent something even more personal. They remind us that creativity can be rooted in place.
