Creativity is something I never thought I had. For much of my life, I believed creativity belonged to the “creatives” — the painters, poets, writers, dancers, actors, chefs, and artists; the ones with impeccable taste, the coolest tattoos, and the most interesting style. I falsely believed that creativity was something you either had or you didn’t.
Now I know that creativity goes far beyond being “artsy.” It is the movement of energy toward something meaningful. It is anything that invites us to see things in a new way that we never even imagined. It’s the willingness to remain open to all outcomes, to think outside the box in any capacity. To carve out a path through intuition, effort, and trust. To alchemize our experiences into an offering, activating our own unique way to be of service.
Creativity is what we feel when we’re in a flow state. Where energy sparks and moves in a way that feels magical because we are present with what is in a way that we feel most alive. It is the expansive nature of life itself. Where the sweet spot of energy and effort culminates in something miraculous: a baby, a tree, a novel, a business, a poem, a painting, a song, a relationship of any kind.
Creativity doesn’t label something as simply good or bad. It makes room for it all. It asks us to wrap our arms around the many paradoxes of life: nature and nurture, birth and death, endings and beginnings, love and hate, contraction and expansion, the light and the dark.
In business ownership, creativity means the ability to innovate, the willingness to remain open to all challenges and outcomes, and the understanding of what it takes to bring something to life. It’s the alchemy and action of intuition, courage, collaboration, passion, and trust. It doesn’t seek to control, but to participate. To hold a personal vision while simultaneously considering one’s community.
Ultimately, creativity means opening the doors and windows of our hearts and minds; traveling outward into the world while also journeying deeply within ourselves. It is planting a seed, cultivating it with care, and patiently, lovingly, faithfully watching it grow.
