You notice smudges on your sliding glass door. There are spider webs draping your kitchen window. Dirt has accumulated on your windowsills and tracks…you’ve decided it’s finally time to clean your windows.
If you’ve never worked with a professional window cleaner, or you’re looking for a new provider, you’ll likely have a bunch of questions while interviewing contractors.
This month we asked our amazing Spotless customer service team – Cadence, Christina and Ash
– to tell us the top window cleaning “frequently asked questions” and their best (Spotless) answers so we could share them with our neighbors.
We hope you learn something!
How is the service done? What methods and tools are used?
Spotless does the majority of its window cleaning the old-fashioned way: by hand. The tools we use include sectional ladder and stepladder to access windows, a hand mop and squeegee to clean glass, a sponge and chamois for detailing, and a bucket containing specialized window cleaning solution. Our window cleaning solution is ecologically friendly. We use professional-grade hand tools purchased through a window cleaning distributor.
Water-fed extension poles are a newer technology we are increasingly using on outside windows for ease of access and improved technician safety. Water-fed systems feed ultra-purified water through an
extension pole with a soft brush at the end, gently agitating window glass and frames to remove debris
and streaks. This method cleans higher windows to a professional standard without ladder work. The
results are comparable to hand cleaning, but water-fed poles can only be used on the outside of the home.
Spotless never uses power washing equipment to wash windows.
Will window cleaning remove spider webs?
Yes! Our technicians carry a dusting wand to remove all spider webs and debris 6-8” away from
the window frame. We start the window cleaning process from the outside-in, clearing spider
webs and debris from edges of windows before cleaning the glass.
Hand tools include a window cleaning mop, squeegee and chamois. Our technicians wear shoe covers inside the home.
We can’t control how fast the spiders build back, however, so if you notice persistent issues with
spider web formation, contact a pest control company to understand your options.
How many people will come to clean?
How long will the service take?
Our window cleaning teams are usually made up of 2 technicians. However, we will occasionally staff 3 or 4 technicians on a window cleaning team, depending on the size of the project.
The average mid-size home in the Richmond market has 15-30 windows / glass doors, and window
cleaning service usually takes 2-4 hours. For larger homes with 40+ windows, the service may require a
full workday (or up to two days for luxury properties).
Other factors present on the property that tend to increase time onsite include:
- Storm windows (extra layer of glass), screens and mullions/dividers
- Heavy landscaping or sloped terrain
- Soiled condition of windows or need for detailed cleaning, such as mold removal
Do I need to be home for the service?
Typically, yes, as service technicians will need to spend some time cleaning inside. If you’ve
scheduled an inside and outside cleaning or have storm windows or screens, we ask that you be
at home for at least part of the service to allow for interior access. Our teams are flexible and can
easily work around the client’s schedule if they need to be away from the house during the
appointment.
Are there different levels of service, and does that change the price?
Most window cleaning companies offer different levels of service at different price points.
Spotless offers three service options:
Outside-only: All window glass, frames, and exposed sills on the outside of the home.
- Inside and outside – standard: All window glass, frames, and exposed sills on the inside and outside of home. For homes with storm windows, this service will include cleaning all four sides of glass.
- Inside and outside – PREMIUM: The highest service tier, which includes the standard cleaning PLUS raising of each window sash and performing a detailed cleaning of interior sills and tracks.
- Outside-only cleaning is our lowest price point, with PREMIUM cleaning producing the longest-lasting clean and best overall value for windows with heavier soil.
How long will windows “stay clean” after the service?
A professional window cleaning will usually leave windows and frames looking clean for 3-6 months, although this varies. The right frequency for window cleaning depends on each home’s exposure to tree cover and nature’s elements, as well as seasonal moisture and humidity.
The fall’s milder weather (lower moisture / humidity) make it an ideal season for window cleaning in Richmond, VA. We find that fall and winter cleaning can produce a longer-lasting result due to seasonal factors.
