Halloween is a special time of year for our little goblins and ghouls—but all that sweet fun can be particularly terrifying for their teeth!

With candy bowls overflowing and bags packed with treats, it’s easy for healthy dental habits to get pushed aside. The good news? Your child can enjoy Halloween without putting their smile through a dental horror story.

Here are three simple tips to help keep those little teeth healthy and happy long after Halloween is over.

Steer Clear of the Sticky Stuff

While all candy contains sugar, some types are more troublesome for teeth than others. Candies that dissolve or melt away relatively quickly, such as chocolate, are generally a better choice than sticky treats like gummy bears, Air Heads, or caramels.

Sticky candy can cling to the surfaces and grooves of teeth, giving cavity-causing bacteria more time to feed on the sugar. The longer that sugary residue hangs around, the greater the opportunity for tooth decay to develop.

So, when choosing a Halloween treat, think less sticky and quick to disappear!

Have Hauntingly Good Hygiene

Halloween is no time to take a vacation from brushing and flossing!

Be sure your child brushes and flosses every day throughout the Halloween season. Younger children often don’t yet have the manual dexterity needed to brush and floss effectively on their own. Older children, meanwhile, may be tempted to race through their routine so they can get back to their Halloween fun.

Make oral hygiene a team effort. Help your little ones brush and floss thoroughly, especially before bedtime. A few extra minutes of attention can go a long way toward keeping plaque—and cavities—away.

Set Limits Before Their Teeth Look Like Candy Corn

A little over-indulging on Halloween is perfectly reasonable, but how often your child eats candy does matter.

Rather than allowing kids to graze on their entire haul from noon until bedtime, set some simple limits. Enjoying a treat or two at a designated time is much easier on their teeth than snacking on sugary foods throughout the day.

Frequent exposure to sugar and acids gives teeth repeated “attacks” and less time to recover between them. Establishing boundaries around when and how much candy your child eats can help keep Halloween fun without turning it into a month-long sugar fest.

Keep the Fun—and the Healthy Smile!

Halloween should be about costumes, creativity, and making sweet memories—not worrying about a scary trip to the dentist.

With a little planning, good brushing and flossing, and some moderation, your little ghosts and goblins can enjoy their favorite Halloween treats while keeping their smiles healthy.

Here’s to a Happy Halloween and a bootiful smile!
