A heartfelt reminder to plan before disaster reaches our doorstep.
When the News Feels Too Close to Home
Some nights, we turn on the television expecting ordinary news, and instead we see families leaving homes behind, smoke filling the sky, roads covered in water, hillsides giving way, or buildings shaken by an earthquake. Even when the disaster is far away, it touches us because we imagine our own loved ones, our own homes, and our own community.
It is natural to ask, “What if it happened here?” The answer is not to live in fear, but to prepare with love. Preparedness is one of the quiet ways we care for each other before an emergency ever happens.
Prepared vs. Ready
Being prepared means we have a plan, supplies, important documents, emergency contacts, and local alerts in place. Being ready means we have practiced enough to act calmly when time matters.
Preparedness is what we do ahead of time. Readiness is what helps us respond when the moment comes.
Simple Ways to Prepare at Home
Make a Family Emergency Plan
- Build an emergency kit with water, food, first aid supplies, medications, flashlights, batteries, a radio, cash, pet supplies, a Bible, and copies of important documents.
- Choose two meeting places: one close to home and one outside your neighborhood or town.
- Plan more than one evacuation route and practice it with everyone in the household.
- Sign up for local alerts and keep a battery-powered or hand-crank radio available.
- Teach responsible family members how and when to shut off gas, water, and electricity.
Stay Connected with Loved Ones
Communication can be one of the hardest parts of an emergency, especially when family members live far away. Choose an out-of-area contact who can help everyone check in. Write phone numbers and meeting addresses on paper cards for wallets, purses, backpacks, and vehicles. If phone calls do not go through, try texting a short message such as, “I am safe,” “I am at our meeting place,” or “Call our out-of-area contact.”
A Final Thought
We may never be completely prepared for every disaster, but we can be more prepared than we were yesterday. Every bottle of water stored, every phone number written down, every conversation with family, every prayer offered, and every practice plan can become an act of faith, love, and stewardship.
We prepare because disasters are uncertain. We get ready because our loved ones, homes, neighbors, and communities matter—and because being prepared allows us to serve others when they may need us most.
