1.48 million.
Pretty big number, huh?
That is the number of nonprofits—501(c)(3)s in formal speak—in the United States helping better their local, regional or even nationwide communities.
Of those, 64,248 serve across the state of Ohio.
And of those, 1,659 do good in Greene County. Among the 88 counties in Ohio, we are seventh in the number of nonprofits serving any number of our 167,000 residents.
Most continue to actively improve our quality of life at some level. They help make Greene County the distinct place we call home. As nonprofits they are literally accountable to their community to fulfill—and prove—their value and influence for good.
Generosity and nonprofits have been an anchor and feature nationwide for 250 years. And yes, they rely on the generosity of others. It’s their fuel.
I have served in and with the nonprofit community for more than 40 years. Its role in making our communities better each day is unprecedented.
I am sure you have heard that no other country in the world stirs generosity like the United States. Anyone remember “We Are the World?” While headlines might draw attention to well known national causes, most of our generosity is focused on local efforts that one can see and hear the effects of firsthand.
Local efforts like the 1,659 nonprofits right in our own backyard.
About 70% of individuals who annually contribute to nonprofits give their time and treasure to one organization. The remaining 30% support multiple nonprofits. And while foundations and corporations receive public accolades for their donations, 64% of all gifts to nonprofits quietly come from individuals, with annual average gifts totaling $187. Those who give often simply follow their passion for the causes that they support.
Do you have a favorite local charity or nonprofit? Are you aware of one or more that are caring for segments of your community?
I frequently chat with those who want to give, but are uncertain where to direct a gift. When I ask about their passions or interests, they often share a previous experience that marked them. I then say, “Have you heard of this organization? They help those you are interested in.” That organization is sometimes only miles from where they live, but they had no idea of its existence.
Generosity is the fuel in the engine of our local charities and service organizations. We are thankful for the support that many already offer.
If you are not connected, look around. Take the time to consider supporting a local nonprofit and help do good. I know you will feel good! When you fuel these engines, you help heighten the quality of life in Greene County. And there is truly no place like home!
