October is a fun-filled month for kids, with cooler weather, colorful leaves, school activities and, of course, Halloween! While costumes and candy are part of the excitement, Halloween is also a wonderful opportunity to encourage healthy habits, spend time together and create memories that last a lifetime.
Keep Kids Moving
As the days get shorter and temperatures drop, it can be tempting to spend more time indoors. Encourage kids to stay active by taking a family walk, playing outside, riding bikes or participating in a YMCA program. Even trick-or-treating can be a great way to get moving while spending time with family and friends.
Enjoy Treats in Moderation
Halloween candy doesn’t have to be off-limits. Instead, teach kids that treats are one part of a balanced diet. Encourage them to enjoy their favorites in moderation while continuing to eat regular meals and snacks that include fruits, vegetables, whole grains and protein. A healthy meal before trick-or-treating can also help keep kids from filling up on candy.
Make Halloween About More Than Candy
Halloween has a special way of bringing people together. Neighborhoods come alive, families gather, kids show off their costumes and simple traditions become memories that last for years.
For children, Halloween is about so much more than candy. It’s dressing up as a favorite character, decorating pumpkins, sharing laughs with friends and being part of something exciting. As adults, many of us remember those same traditions from our own childhoods.
That’s the magic of community—the experiences we share become the memories we carry with us.
At the Y, we see that same sense of community every day. A child trying a new activity, a family cheering from the sidelines, friends meeting for a class or a camper finding their place in a new group—these moments help children build confidence, connection and a sense of belonging.
Have a Safe & Happy Halloween
Most importantly, make healthy living—and Halloween—fun! Put on the costume, decorate the pumpkin, tell the spooky story, take the family photo and enjoy time together.
Because years from now, it probably won’t be the biggest piece of candy or the most expensive costume you remember. It will be the people you were with and the moments you shared.
From our Y family to yours, we wish you a Halloween filled with laughter, healthy habits, spooky fun and memories worth keeping!
Happy Halloween from the Regional YMCA of Western Connecticut!
