Is Your Plumbing Ready for Brown Friday?

Black Friday may get all the attention, but in the plumbing world, the day after Thanksgiving has earned a less glamorous nickname: “Brown Friday.”

With a house full of family and friends, Thanksgiving can put your plumbing system to the test. More people means more toilet flushes, more dishes in the sink, more food going through the garbage disposal, and a lot more demand on drains that may already be struggling.

The good news? Most Thanksgiving plumbing problems don’t come completely out of nowhere. Your home may already be giving you warning signs.

Pay attention to slow drains.

If your kitchen sink, shower, or bathroom sink is draining slower than usual, don’t wait for it to become a complete blockage. Extra holiday use can quickly turn a minor inconvenience into a major backup.

Give your toilets a checkup.

That guest bathroom that rarely gets used is about to get a workout. If the toilet has been slow to flush, clogs frequently, runs constantly, or makes unusual gurgling sounds, now is the time to have it checked.

Be kind to your garbage disposal.

Thanksgiving meal prep can be tough on kitchen plumbing. Avoid putting grease, fats, bones, large amounts of potato peels, and fibrous foods down the disposal. Even with a garbage disposal, your kitchen sink isn’t a trash can.

Know when it could be something bigger.

One slow drain may be an isolated clog, but multiple slow drains, gurgling toilets, foul drain odors, or water backing up into another fixture could signal a problem farther down the drain or sewer line.

Don’t Wait Until the Guests Arrive

October is a great time to address those little plumbing issues you’ve been putting off. Clearing a troublesome drain or repairing a problem toilet now is much easier than dealing with a plumbing emergency when Thanksgiving dinner is on the table and the house is full of guests.

A little preparation can help make sure the only thing overflowing this Thanksgiving is your plate.
