When it comes to hormones, the terminology can sound a little scary.
Synthetic. Natural. Bioidentical. Compounded.
Patients often walk into our office having heard all four terms- but without a clear understanding of what they actually mean. And with so much conflicting information online, it can be difficult to separate smart medicine from clever marketing.
So, in the spirit of the season, let’s take some of the mystery out of hormone therapy.
What Does “Bioidentical” Actually Mean?
A bioidentical hormone has the same molecular structure as a hormone naturally produced by the human body.
Common examples include estradiol and progesterone. Bioidentical hormones may be available in FDA-approved prescription medications, and certain hormones can also be prepared by a compounding pharmacy when clinically appropriate.
That distinction matters.
“Bioidentical” describes the hormone’s chemical structure- it does not automatically mean a medication is compounded, and it does not automatically make one form of hormone therapy safer than another.
Hormone Therapy Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All
Hormones influence far more than most people realize. When hormone levels change with age, menopause, perimenopause or other circumstances, patients may experience changes in:
- Energy and motivation
- Sleep
- Mood
- Sexual health and libido
- Body composition
- Hot flashes and night sweats
- Vaginal and urinary symptoms
- Bone health
- Overall quality of life
The goal of hormone optimization isn’t simply to chase a number on a laboratory report.
At Performance Medical Clinic, we believe the bigger picture matters: symptoms, medical history, risk factors, appropriate laboratory data, lifestyle and the individual patient’s goals.
The appropriate hormone, dose and route of administration can vary considerably from one person to another which is why Performance Medical Clinic offers individualized and personalized treatment plans for each patient.
What About Compounded Bioidentical Hormones?
Compounded medications can play an important role when a patient has a specific clinical need that cannot be met by a commercially available medication; for example, a required or desired dosage, formulation or ingredient modification.
The Performance Medical Clinic Approach
Our philosophy is simple: Performance. Longevity. Optimization
Hormone health is one piece of a much larger picture.
We take the time to evaluate the individual patient, discuss symptoms and goals, assess appropriate health and risk factors, and determine whether hormone therapy is appropriate.
For some patients, properly selected hormone therapy can be an important part of improving symptoms and quality of life. For others, a different approach may be more appropriate.
Either way, the decision should begin with education!
No Tricks. Just Better Information.
There doesn’t need to be anything spooky about understanding your hormones.
Ask questions. Understand your options. Know what you’re taking and why you’re taking it. And most importantly, work with a medical provider who evaluates you as a whole person, rather than treating a single laboratory value.
Because hormone optimization isn’t about trying to turn back the clock. It’s about helping patients feel, function and perform their best through every stage of life.
