Perimenopause: The Conversation Women Aren’t Having Enough

“Why does my body feel like it’s on fire, and why isn’t anyone helping?”

For generations, women have often been expected to simply endure the changes that come with perimenopause and menopause. But that conversation is changing.

Women are caught between the old expectation to “suffer through” the menopause transition and a new era that prioritizes women’s health. More women are advocating for themselves, seeking evidence-based support, and challenging the idea that disruptive symptoms should simply be tolerated. This cultural shift is bringing greater attention to an important stage of women’s health.

Part of the challenge is that the menopause transition can be difficult to identify. Symptoms can overlap with other conditions, including hypothyroidism, depression and anemia. This makes a comprehensive, individualized assessment important, not only to understand what a woman is experiencing, but also to consider her overall health and determine appropriate options for support.

Perimenopause and menopause are not the same experience, nor do they affect every woman in the same way. Yet both are part of the broader menopause transition, a significant stage of life that deserves greater understanding, informed care and open conversation.

More than 80% of women experience vasomotor symptoms during perimenopause and menopause, including night sweats, hot flashes, flushing, heart palpitations and dizziness. These symptoms can last for years, with a median duration of approximately 7.4 years.

Other symptoms, including vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, urinary urgency and recurrent infections, fall under genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), which affects approximately 40–50% of women.

These symptoms are not isolated inconveniences; they can affect nearly every aspect of a woman’s physical, emotional and daily life. Women may also experience changes in mood, libido, memory, weight, energy and sleep. Together, these symptoms can leave women feeling exhausted, frustrated and disconnected from themselves.

The encouraging news is that women have more opportunities than ever to learn about what is happening in their bodies and discuss evidence-based options with qualified health-care professionals. Treatment is not one-size-fits-all. Depending on a woman’s symptoms, medical history, health risks and personal preferences, care may include lifestyle strategies, non-hormonal therapies, hormone therapy or other individualized approaches.

Perhaps the most important shift is simply that women are talking about these experiences more openly. Perimenopause and menopause are natural stages of life, but that does not mean disruptive symptoms have to be silently endured.

For many women, having a conversation about symptoms can be an important first step toward feeling heard and informed.

At Beam Beauty & Wellness Centre, women can access comprehensive Women’s Health Consultations with a medical professional to discuss concerns related to perimenopause, menopause, hormonal and intimate health, and overall wellness. The goal is to give women a supportive place to ask questions, better understand what they are experiencing, and explore appropriate options based on their individual needs.

Women deserve credible information, thoughtful conversations and care that considers the whole person. By continuing to talk openly about hormonal and intimate health, we can replace uncertainty and stigma with knowledge, options and informed choice.
