As temperatures drop and Hamptons homes transition from air conditioning to heating systems, October is an ideal time to check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Test every detector in your home and replace batteries where applicable. Don’t assume that because a detector looks fine, it’s functioning properly. Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms have limited service lives and should be replaced according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Pay particular attention to detectors near bedrooms, fireplaces, fuel-burning appliances, and attached garages. Hardwired and interconnected systems offer an additional level of protection by allowing alarms throughout the home to sound when one detects a hazard.
If you’re unsure about the age, placement, or operation of your detectors, have them professionally evaluated.
A few minutes of prevention this fall can provide invaluable protection throughout the heating season.
