Don’t wait to enjoy life!
One thing I’ve learned after nearly two decades of working in retirement living is that people often wait too long to explore their options.
It’s understandable. If you’re healthy, independent, and comfortable in your home, moving may be the last thing on your mind. But learning about your options doesn’t mean you’re ready to move. It simply means you’ll be more informed about what you might be missing out on.
Picture Your Everyday Life
Think about what you want your retirement years to include. Would you enjoy having fewer household responsibilities? More opportunities to socialize? Convenient access to wellness, dining, activities, or transportation? What would make your life easier, fuller, or simply more enjoyable?
Those questions are just as important as square footage and floor plans.
The goal isn’t to have every detail of your future figured out. It’s to understand your choices while you have plenty of them.
Give Yourself the Gift of Time
Decisions look different when they are made by choice rather than necessity.
Waiting for a health change, fall, hospitalization, or other unexpected event can turn a decision about where to live into an urgent one. Starting earlier gives you time to tour communities, compare costs, ask questions, involve your family, and decide what matters most to you.
It also gives you time to tackle practical considerations like downsizing, organizing belongings, and preparing a home for sale without trying to accomplish everything at once.
Think Beyond Today
As you explore your options, don’t evaluate a community based only on what you need right now. Ask what would happen if your needs changed.
A Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) offers multiple levels of living and support within one community. This can allow someone to begin in independent living while having access to assisted living, memory care, rehabilitation, or nursing care if needed later.
The perks of knowing the staff, the community, and still having access to all the lifestyle amenities you enjoy – all under one roof creates ease in life transitions.
For couples, this continuum can be particularly important because two people may experience very different needs as they age. Having access to the services and resources you need while remaining close to the one you love is important.
You may not be ready to make a move today — but it’s never too early to start exploring your retirement, reimagined!
