Because most of us rarely replace our floors, we may find ourselves lost when it’s time to seek new ones. Inner questions abound: Where should I go? Whom should I talk to? What will look good? What will last? What about my pets? Who will install it? Will they move furniture or appliances? The list goes on and on; so a few helpful considerations will provide guidance as you prepare for the flooring replacement journey.
First, what rooms need attention and what are your priorities? How is each room used? Is it a high traffic area? Is it likely to see water or moisture? Is this a space pets will be in?
Next, how fastidious are you? Are you likely to vacuum or mop several times a week, or is once a month more your thing? Some floors tend to hide dust and dirt, while others that look magnificent when clean require more frequent attention to maintain that next-level appearance.
After that, consider how you would like to use the space when the floors are complete. Do you want it practical and functional, ready for entertaining — or a bit of both? Floors have a way of helping to set the tone for the entire room; and, when chosen properly, they’ll stand up to what you throw at them.
Then, how do you want the room to feel? Welcoming and comfortable? Modern and sleek? A little rustic? This may seem to repeat the previous question, but utility and impression can be very different and equally important things. Often a floor may look beautiful in a showroom but not accomplish the feel you are going for in your home.
Now for the most important question: Who is going to help with all of this? This question should be answered with care. We might look at 50 different couches and chairs with an interior designer, make a choice — and then replace the furniture five or 6 years later…BUT when it comes to the floor that will be there for 20-25 years or even longer, we pick something off a pallet at the back of a big box store under fluorescent lights because it has a “great price”. Then it gets installed by some guy we chose randomly off a list the store handed us; and we cross our fingers and hope for the best.
There is a better way! The question (and the answer!) is Who. Who is willing and able to answer all your flooring questions? Who can tell you the difference between laminate and LVP? Or whether you’d be better off with an SPC or WPC? Who is willing to bring products to your home so you can see them with your lighting, paint, and furniture? Who has the best installers and will ensure the job is done right? Who will move your furniture and appliances with care? Who will make sure you are happy with the job when all is said and done?
Before you replace your floors, choose your next flooring specialist. Investigate. Read the reviews. Ask your friends. You will be happy you took a little extra time.
Then enjoy your new floors!
