Walking Through the Grieving Process

It would be cliché to say that “time heals all wounds” when it comes to grief. The truth is, grief is difficult, and it can surface in moments you never expected. There are no real rules for ‘how to overcome grief.’ It is a different journey for everyone, but it shouldn’t be one you walk alone.

The need to honor a loved one’s life rarely ends after the funeral service. There are countless ways to remember them in your everyday life, ways that can also bring you closer to the people around you who want to offer their support. Preparing a loved one’s favorite meal, playing their favorite game, or listening to their favorite music are simple but meaningful activities you can share with your trusted circle as you move through grief together.

For some, fulfillment comes through giving back. Volunteering with an organization that held special meaning to you and your loved one can surround you with others who share your sense of purpose, and who may even understand your story in ways few others can.

If you’d rather connect with people who relate to your experience on a deeper level, San Antonio is home to more than a dozen support groups and grief programs. If you’re ready to take that first step, consider reaching out to The Ecumenical Center in San Antonio.

At Sunset Northwest Funeral Home, we’re committed to supporting you throughout your journey through grief. We offer a 24-hour Compassion Helpline to every family we serve, providing confidential access to a licensed grief counseling professional whenever you need it. Beyond the helpline, we’ve created meaningful and unique ways to honor the loved ones of the families in our care.

Each November, to recognize Día de los Muertos, we set up an ofrenda at our location that families are welcome to contribute to in remembrance of those they’ve lost. At the close of every year, we also host our annual Night of Remembrance, welcoming back all the families we’ve served throughout the year. The evening includes a shared dinner, photos and stories honoring each loved one, and a closing memorial service to commemorate everyone we had the privilege of caring for that year.

If you’re reading this while struggling through grief, let it be a gentle reminder that it’s okay to let others help carry the weight. Share the good memories. Let your grief become something that helps others heal, too, and if there’s ever anything you need, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us directly at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home. We’re here for you, now and always.
