Why Learning Begins Long Before Preschool?

Many parents think their child’s educational journey begins with preschool. From a Montessori perspective, learning starts much earlier. The first three years of life are a period of extraordinary growth, as a child’s brain forms connections at an incredible pace, laying the foundation for language, movement, relationships, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.

One of the most common misconceptions is that infants simply need to be cared for until they’re old enough for school. In reality, every interaction is an opportunity for learning. Every conversation, moment of movement, and chance to explore helps shape how a child understands themselves and the world around them.

In Montessori, we don’t ask, “How can we teach a baby?” Instead, we ask, “How can we prepare an environment that supports the incredible learning already taking place?”

For infants, this means calm, thoughtfully prepared spaces that encourage freedom of movement, hands-on exploration, and meaningful interactions with trusted adults. Rather than directing every activity, Montessori educators carefully observe each child, responding to their stage of development while fostering independence and confidence from the very beginning.

As one of our Montessori Guides shared, “One of the greatest joys of working with infants is watching confidence grow through the smallest everyday moments. Seeing a baby master a new movement, communicate a need, or explore something independently reminds us that even the smallest milestones are extraordinary.”

At Guidepost Montessori at Laurel Oak, we’re excited to welcome our youngest learners with the opening of our Montessori infant program in Fall 2026. Our infant community, known as Nido (Italian for “nest”), is a specially prepared environment designed to support infants and their families during the earliest months of life, creating a strong foundation for future learning and development.

Long before a child enters preschool, learning is already underway – it begins from birth. By nurturing children’s natural curiosity from the very beginning, we can help them develop the confidence, independence, and joy of discovery that lasts a lifetime.
