Every October, I notice the same thing happening around us. The days become shorter, temperatures drop, routines change, and suddenly we find ourselves surrounded by coughs, colds and the inevitable question: “How can I stay healthy this winter?”
My philosophy is simple: don’t wait until you’re run down to start taking care of yourself.
Our bodies are remarkably intelligent and resilient, but they need the right nourishment and support to do their job well. October is the perfect time to begin preparing for the months ahead by strengthening the foundations of our health.
Start With Your Gut
When we talk about immune health, we often think about vitamin C, supplements or avoiding sick people. But one of the most important places to start is our digestive system.
Our gut plays a significant role in our immune function, and the trillions of microorganisms living within our digestive tract are an important part of maintaining a healthy internal environment.
This is one reason I am so passionate about fermented and sprouted foods. Foods such as fermented vegetables, water kefir and other cultured foods can provide beneficial microorganisms and valuable nutrients while supporting a healthy digestive environment.
Rather than waiting until January to make dramatic changes, consider adding small amounts of nourishing, fermented foods to your meals now.
Feed Your Body What It Needs
As the weather gets colder, I encourage my clients to think about nourishment rather than restriction.
Fill your plate with colourful vegetables, leafy greens, berries, citrus fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes and other whole foods. Include quality sources of protein and healthy fats to help provide sustained energy and keep meals satisfying.
Foods rich in nutrients such as vitamin C, zinc, vitamin A and antioxidants can all play a role in supporting normal immune function.
And don’t forget hydration. We tend to associate dehydration with hot summer days, but our bodies still need adequate fluids throughout the colder months.
Don’t Underestimate Sleep and Stress
There is another part of immune health that we often overlook: rest.
When we’re busy, sleep is frequently the first thing we sacrifice. Yet quality sleep gives our bodies an opportunity to rest, repair and restore.
Stress matters too. Living in a constant state of stress can take a toll on the body. Even a few minutes each day devoted to deep breathing, meditation, gentle movement or simply stepping outside can help us create moments of calm.
I believe wellness is about caring for the whole person—not simply what we eat.
Start Before You Need It
You don’t need to completely transform your lifestyle overnight. In fact, I believe sustainable wellness is built through small choices repeated consistently.
This October, try adding one more nourishing food to your day. Drink a little more water. Go to bed 30 minutes earlier. Take a walk. Include a fermented food with a meal. Give yourself five quiet minutes without your phone.
These may seem like small things, but our bodies notice the consistency.
Preparing for winter isn’t about trying to create a perfect immune system or avoiding every cold that comes our way. It’s about giving your body the resources, nourishment and care it needs to function at its best.
Your healthiest winter may begin with the choices you make today.
