3 Things Your Electrician Wants You to Know

When it comes to electricity, it’s better to ask the question early than deal with the damage later.

I spend a lot of time in people’s homes, and one thing I’ve learned is that electrical problems usually give you a warning before they become a major problem.

The trick is knowing what not to ignore.

Here are three things I wish every homeowner knew.

1. Flickering Lights May Be Trying to Tell You Something

Every flickering light isn’t an emergency. Sometimes it really is just a loose bulb. But if you notice lights dimming when an appliance comes on, multiple lights flickering, or something that just doesn’t seem normal, it’s worth having it checked.

A loose connection or overloaded circuit can start small and become a much bigger issue if it’s ignored.

2. Your Home May Be Asking More From Its Electrical System Than It Used To

Think about how much more we plug in today compared to 20 or 30 years ago. Computers, TVs, kitchen appliances, security systems, chargers, hot tubs and now EV chargers are all putting additional demand on our homes.

That doesn’t automatically mean you need a new electrical panel, but if you own an older home or you’re planning a major upgrade, it’s a good idea to make sure your electrical system can safely handle it.

3. Some Warning Signs Should Never Be Ignored

If an outlet or switch feels unusually warm, you hear buzzing, smell something burning, see discoloration, or have a breaker that keeps tripping, don’t just keep resetting it and hoping for the best.

Your electrical system is telling you something.

My advice is simple: when it comes to electricity, it’s better to ask the question early than deal with the damage later.

At Sammy Electric, our goal isn’t just to fix the problem. We want homeowners to understand what’s happening, feel comfortable with the solution and know their home is safe when we leave.

If something around your home doesn’t look or feel right, give us a call. Sometimes a little peace of mind is the best repair of all.
